The JEOL JXA-iSP100 Electron Probe Microanalyser is a state-of-the-art instrument designed for high-precision mineral chemical analysis. Equipped with four wavelength-dispersive spectrometers (WDS), it delivers exceptionally accurate quantitative measurements of mineral compositions, even for trace elements. An integrated energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) complements the WDS system, enabling rapid qualitative chemical analyses and high-resolution elemental mapping. This powerful combination allows researchers to efficiently characterise complex mineral assemblages, supporting both detailed academic investigations and applied industry projects.

Our mission is to deliver world-class, high-precision mineral chemistry analyses that support both academic research and industry applications. We are committed to fostering collaboration, driving innovation in geoscience, and training the next generation of skilled scientists through hands-on experience with cutting-edge electron probe microanalysis.
About UCT Electron Probe Facility
Our Mission
What we provide

Mineral Chemistry Analysis
Accurate and detailed mineral chemistry analysis to support research and industry projects.

Compositional Mapping
High-resolution compositional mapping of samples to visualize elemental distributions and textures.

Capacity building
Training the next generation of electron probe users and technicians.
Our funders
We are deeply grateful for the generous support that brought the new electron probe facility to life. This achievement was made possible through an NRF NEP grant, with additional backing from the University of Cape Town, the Department of Geological Sciences, and CIMERA. Their commitment to advancing research and innovation ensures our scientists have the tools to push the frontiers of discovery.
